Ina’s Pan Fried Onion Dip


  • 2 large yellow onions
  • 4 T unsalted butter
  • 1/4 c vegetable oil
  • 1/4 t ground cayenne pepper
  • 1 t Kosher salt
  • 1/2 t pepper from the mill
  • 4 oz cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise


  1. Cut the onions in half and then slice them into 1/8 inch thick half-rounds
  2. Heat the butter and oil in a large skillet over medium heat
  3. Add the onions, cayenne, salt and pepper and saute for 10 minutes
  4. Reduce the heat to medium low and cook, stirring occasionally for 20 minutes or until the onions are caramelized
  5. Allow to cool
  6. Place the cream cheese, sour cream and mayo in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle blade and beat until smooth
  7. Add the onions and mix well
  8. Serve at room temperature
