Mary Jo from Cleveland’s Molasses Cookies

These are very similar to my ginger cookies, but have a little different texture and a slightly richer taste. They are wonderful! Make some now!  I promise you won’t regret it.

Mary Jo from Cleveland’s Molasses Cookies

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3/4 cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 t baking soda
  • 1 t ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 t ground ginger
  • 1/2 t Kosher salt
  • 1/4 t ground cloves
  • 1/4 c molasses
  • 1 extra large egg

Instructions

  1. Melt the vegetable shortening and let it cool
  2. Sift together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and salt
  3. With an electric mixer, beat the melted shortening, molasses, egg and sugar for about three minutes
  4. Add the dry ingredients a little at a time, with the mixer running
  5. Chill for 15 minutes
  6. Make the dough into little balls and roll in sugar
  7. Place on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet
  8. Bake at 325 degrees for about 15 minutes

    I was looking for our favorite chewy molasses sugar cookie recipe online and this one looked the closest to what I normally make. We are packed and ready to move and my go-to cookbook is in storage.

    The ingredients do not list sugar or brown sugar, but mention sugar within the instructions. Can you advise on what sugar(s) you use?
