How To Make Home Made Habanero Hot Sauce

One time when I was dorking around on the internet, I saw a recipe for “Homemade Hot Sauce”. The idea was intriguing, so when a friend gave me a few Habanero and a bunch of Kung Pao peppers, I decided to try and make my own.

If you happen to have an empty 12 oz bottle of rice vinegar around, it’s perfect for this recipe. If not, any empty bottle (preferably with a shaker top) will do.

Wash whatever bottle you have with hot soapy water, rinse thoroughly and let air dry

Ingredient list:

five or six cloves of garlic
1 T of Kosher Salt
15 or so black peppercorns
1 bay leaf
several hot peppers, any variety
1 cup of cider or white vinegar

Peel five or six cloves of garlic

add them to the bottle

add the kosher salt and peppercorns

bay leaf

rinse the peppers and dry them with a paper towel

cut the peppers into pieces that will fit in the jar, pour vinegar over the whole thing

cap and let it sit on your countertop looking pretty for a few days

then just put it in the fridge and use it like you would any other hot sauce, on eggs, meats, vegetables, ice cream..you get the picture.

I also tried just chopping a bunch of Kung Paos up in the food processor and putting them in a jar with white vinegar

and it was hot! It tastes like peppers, pure and simple. The other sauce though is complex and much more interesting. I have used it on/in scrambled eggs, I’ve added it to the egg mixture I use before breading chicken to fry (quite good, it just added a little kick!).

If you like hot stuff, give it a try!

I’m struggling to imagine hot sauce on ice cream too! This sounds like it has quite a bite to it! I suspect it might be a little out of my league 🙂

Oh, perfect! I have a bunch of those jars leftover from when I was making home-made vanilla…and a slew of hot peppers in the garden (the only ones the dog doesn’t like to eat – ha!)

I will definitely be giving this a try. What a fun gift for Christmas, too!

Thanks for a delicious and creative link for Alphabe-Thursday’s letter “H”!

    This made me happy.

So that’s how you make hot sauce! Unfortunately, I’m incredibly sensitive to anything spicy so I will probably never get the opportunity to make and use your hot sauce recipe… However, they do look really pretty in the jars! Maybe I can just use them for decoration 🙂 Or my husband can eat it with his ice cream 🙂

I’ll have chocolate ice cream with hot sauce, please. Aha. I may be allergic to kitchens, but not to what comes out of them. A friend of mine from Guizhou province is a master of making the local hot sauce, and for years she’s kept me stocked. Good H post!

Love this! We grow about ten kinds of peppers each year. The Engineer makes sauces in varying degrees of hotness. One of his most popular (with his chile head frineds) is habanero sauce. It’s pretty brutal, only a few carrots to cut the heat. The one that the rest of us common folks can eat is his jalapeno sauce. Regardless, he just spins the peppers in a blender with apple cider vinegar to leave the pure essence of that pepper’s taste intact. I’d love to try some of yours! They look so pretty, and might offer an alternative to those who really don’t consider getting their heads blown off with hotness the ultimate experience. Thanks for sharing.

Your hot sauce is really pretty! Hubs made some this fall with left over hot peppers. He made two batches. I think he threw out the first because he did not like how it turned out. The second one he used mostly habanaros but he blended his into a sauce before bottling it.

My mother has been making this hot sauce as long as I can remember. All thirteen of her children got burned on these at one point are another when toddlers so, she is the only one in the family that will use it on a regular bases.

I have to admit thought that I do like a dash of the hot stuff on my ham and beans.

Thanks for the visit to my headstone and hay bales post. I do so appreciate your comment.

(thank you for stopping by and oh yes, you would enjoy a vacation to Hawaii :o) Take a look at the sites to the neighboring islands as well as what Oahu has to offer. Oahu is the island that most tourists get to see, but if you can check out another island too…they are more “laid-back”.)
