Ina’s Split Pea Soup

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

soup3

This is one of my all time favorite soups.  My Mom used to make it, but I like Ina’s recipe better than any other I’ve ever tried.  The seasoning is perfect.  A hot bowl of this soup is certainly something wonderful to come home to!  I made this with chicken broth to add a little flavor, but if you make it with water or vegetable broth, it’s a really hearty, vegetarian soup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 C chopped yellow onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/8 C olive oil
  • 1/2 t dried oregano
  • 1 1/2 t Kosher Salt
  • 1 t freshly ground pepper
  • 2 C medium diced carrots
  • 1 C medium diced red boiling potatoes, unpeeled
  • 1 lb dried peas
  • 8 C water or chicken broth

Instructions

  1. In a large stock pot, saute onions and garlic in the olive oil until onions are translucent
  2. Add oregano, salt and pepper
  3. Add carrots, potatoes, 1/2 of the split peas and water or broth

I had mine with a glass of Gruner Veitliner and a piece of bread with a slice of Parmesan melted on top and there were no complaints!

Is there anything prettier than that? I like that she keeps it simple. It really is fine that way. Once, when our kids were small, my great sister offered to babysit them overnight so the hub and I could go camping alone. He said, “What are we cooking for supper?” (Cold early autumn night…) I said, “Split pea soup.” He was so happy. I think we ate the whole pot we were so chilled! Happy Friday out there!!

What gorgeous photos! This looks wonderful for a cool autumn night. We’ll be having some of those here soon. My husband would love this soup. He loves anything with peas in it!

I love split pea soup, but I am pretty certain my picky eater husband would take one look at it and say, “Are there any corn dogs left in the freezer?” 😉 This soup looks delicious.

Great choice! Not ready for soup yet, but have been longing to make her mushroom soup. Have you made that yet? Pea soup was a favorite of my parents. I made it constantly for years when they were infirm.

It’s chilly where I am and all I want for dinner (coming up in an hour) is a big bowl of soup. Just like this one actually! 😀

I love pea soup, especially as my mum made it, with a ham bone and yellow peas. Very French Canadian, very good. Ina always makes it easy and delicious, so I’ll probably give this a try, now that I’ve had a nudge from you. Into fall now!

That was one of my Dad’s specialties. Truthfully, I think yours looks better. Maybe it is that yummy looking toasted Parmesan bread on top that sets it off.

Your soup looks so comforting. Now all I need is for it to cool down another 20 degrees here in Phoenix so I can begin to think about nourishing soups like this again! Lovely post and photos.
